What It's Like to be a Psychic Medium
By now everyone has seen John Edward on television and has a good idea of how a psychic medium works.
Mediums are people who possess an incredible sensitivity for seeing, hearing and feeling Spirit people who visit loved ones on the Earth plane; and all fine mediums possess a strong ability to communicate with those in the Spirit world.
Note that here we are talking about psychic mediums who regularly demonstrate excellence in the field. It is unfortunate that the practice of mediumship is not more widely standardized so that the public is better served by those who give the sacred calling of mediumship an excellent name and live as true ambassadors for those in Spirit. Because, as we all know, there are a lot of scary, untalented and nasty people posing as psychics out there!
While some mediums work almost exclusively using one modality (for example, Doris Stokes majored on her gift as a clairaudient to hear those in Spirit), most mediums are clairvoyant, clairaudient and clairsentient; and when they're really firing during a reading, Spirit will inspire them to use all of these intuitive skills at once.
For people who maintain a full-time job and practise as a medium in the evenings and weekends, this can become a very demanding and tiring life to maintain; and it is not unusual for outstanding mediums to quit their day job when they feel Spirit is calling them to serve those on the Other Side and be a full-time mouthpiece for them. And it's also not unusual for working mediums to spend as much time talking with people on the Other Side as with people here on the Earth plane!
One interesting common thread of the personalities of many psychic mediums is their tendency to be very down-to-earth despite spending so much time up in the clouds! Only the most balanced people can sustain a life working as a busy medium where they are constantly communicating with those in Spirit in addition to facing the skepticism of critics who deride the legitimacy of the medium's spiritual calling.
As Doris Stokes famously remarked, she wouldn't wish the life of a medium on her worst enemy, for to be a medium you need the sensitivity of a deer when you are working and the hide of a rhinocerous for when the skeptics and critics come out to savage you.
Mediums vs Psychic Mediums
It's worth mentioning briefly here about the slightly different terminology used in different countries: the British usually speak of 'mediums' while residents of the USA, Australia, Canada and other countries often use the term 'psychic medium'.
The main reason for the latter term (even though it is tautological) is to highlight that the practitioner works as both a psychic (helping the client to glimpse their future) as well as a medium (connecting the client with loved ones in the Spirit world).
As you may have already heard, all mediums are psychic but not all psychics possess mediumship developed enough to communicate with the Spirit world at will. For genuine psychic mediums, though, both specialized skills are finely tuned and well developed.
Furthermore, some psychic mediums (including John Edward and George Anderson) feel directed to concentrate their work solely on delivering mediumship messages and devote no time to clairvoyant readings. All practitioners work slightly differently and experience shows them which spiritual gifts to best focus upon.
While general clairvoyance and psychic ability develops much more rapidly than mediumship and Spirit contact, if you truly desire to devote yourself to serve those in Spirit, you are not alone in your quest and those on the Other Side will gradually give you all you need to undertake this important spiritual journey.
